How to Start a Revolution

My morning coffee routine never gets old. I feel as excited for the first sip each morning as if it did not happen every single day before. It struck me that my jubilee about my joe can sometimes become jumbled with my love of my Jesus. Thoughts like “well, I cant start my devotional time yet, I haven’t had my coffee.” It made me pause.

Reality check: that’s no good! While it may seem like a tiny thing, hear me out!

My relationship with Jesus is the best part of who I am. Without him, my artistic endeavors fall on their faces. Keeping my word? Nope. Kindness and patience? Out the window. Forgiveness? Definitely not. Nothing brings out those things in me except Him- no, not even coffee, haha.

As Acts 17:28 says, “It is in Him that we live and move and have our being.”

How incredible that He cares so deeply about us that He loves to be involved in all parts of our lives!

Even though my mind knows that, sometimes my heart puts things ahead of Him. Sure, it might appear like a tiny thing, but that’s how everything starts. As James 3:5 reminds us, “a small spark lights a whole forest on fire.” There is a reason the famous words of Ralf Waldo Emerson, the “shot heard round the world” caught on. All it takes is one small action or thought to start a revolution- for good or bad. As I meet with God each morning, cup of coffee in hand, I don’t even want a simple cup of coffee to come above him in my life.

There is no shame in admitting sometimes things come above God in our lives, we are human! But I hope my quick confession helps you become more thoughtful about how God’s love for you is so much better than anything else.

For reflection: As you look at your life, is anything coming above Him, even in a small way? How can you put him first again?
