The Creativity Inside of You

I recently made a little how-to video on drawing for Instagram. It was fun to make because I honestly believe we all have an innate creativity inside of us. Because of that, I like to encourage it in others. However, often when I talk to most people about art the conversation goes like this:

“Oh no, I can’t do that kind of thing, I’m not creative.”

Not creative? I wonder. So I probe further. If I’m feeling bold and ask, “What do you mean, not creative? You mean artistically like drawing, writing or music? There are a lot more ways than that to be creative!”

“I don’t think so. You’re just being nice.”

Being nice? I hate when people say that. I’m not being nice, I’m being honest. When I ask why they think they aren’t creative the answer I have often heard is “Because I don’t have any talent. Really, I’m not creative.”

When I hear things like that, a wave of passion hits me and it takes all my restraint not to shake them and say “OH YES you do!”

Yes, some of us have more talent in certain areas, I agree. For instance, one of my sisters is the most incredible scrapbooker. They are are works of art! But I am so not gifted in that! I still try, mind you, but her books are things of beauty! Maybe for you, your creativity is in finding the best new songs and sharing them with other people. Maybe when you cook, something exciting gets lit up inside of you and people love your food. Maybe when you walk into a room, you picture its potential and mentally plan ways to beauty it. Maybe you craft the best stories to make people laugh. The list goes on and on!

We were all made by a creative God and He made us in His image. The first thing he did in the Bible was to create (Genesis 1). As beings crafted in His image, we all have certain characteristics like our maker. Creativity, in whatever form it takes, is one of them!

So I submit to you again- you are creative! I hope this little message helps you revel in your day today as you find ways to be like Maker of the universe and create something wonderful! Let me know in the comments if it inspired you to try anything!
